Haliburton has so many potential day trips it's almost impossible to choose a favourite. With its lakes, woods, and wildlife, people are often invited to be "inspired by nature", but Haliburton is also a great place to be inspired by people. Throughout the Highlands, hardworking, creative people are making Richard Florida's theories come to life. Also, with weather being somewhat unpredicatable, it's nice to have a trip that can mostly indoors. Aim for a Saturday between May and October for maximum enjoyment.
Start your day with breakfast at the Wintergreen Maple Syrup Barn located on the Gelert Road between Haliburton Village and Highway 121. The genial hosts serve hearty all-dayers featuring maple syrup they make themselves, as well as offering lucious syrups and jams that you can take home for future pleasure. Keep your eye out for brochures as the folks at Wintergreen also host musical performances and are rapidly becoming famous B.B.Qers.
After breakfast, hang a right toward Highway 121 and you will discover Lambs and Ivy Antiques barn about five minutes down the road. There you can spend a good chunk of the day poking around and exploring the treasures.
It's another right, through the hamlet of Gelert to Highway 121, and a left toward the village of Kinmount. In Kinmount, follow the signs to Artisans, an artists co-op located in the community hall. The talent and imagination on display is amazing. When you're finished it's an easy stroll down the hill to Heritage Park, where a farmers' market operates from 9 to 2 every Saturday from May to October.
By then you'll probably be ready for coffee and a treat, if not cappucino and brunch. Proceed 6km south of Kinmount on Highway 121 and you'll find Harmony Farm Market. Walking through the door is a quick trip to France. Artisanal cheeses and terrines, fantastic baked goods; it's your choice to take the bounty home or relax at a table while talented chefs feed you.
The Rail Trail runs along the Gelert Road into the village of Kinmount, so in theory, you could make this a bike trip. But it's probably best to take the car. It's nice to have trunk space in case you give into temptation, and this is a very tempting trip. An even better idea is to take a friend's car, so you can relax and enjoy the scenery - lakes, woods, and wildlife - rain or shine.
